San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and generally clients only stay here for the first and last night of their trip as international flights arrive and depart from here.

Tortuguero is a fantastic introduction to Costa Rica and the perfect small town to start your holiday. There are a variety of comfortable lodges all with a swimming pool. Regular tours are included in your stay and all lodges are on a full board basis.

Mawamba Lodge

This lodge is superbly situated right on the beach, just a short walk from Tortuguero. There are hammocks throughout, and a stunning waterfall in the swimming pool. Night tours to see the turtles start from here.

Pachira Lodge

Located in the middle of the exuberant, mystical canals of Tortuguero, just five minutes from the National Park, this lodge has comfortable rooms and an excellent bar and restaurant. Guests are offered two complimentary tours each day, and during the high season, a third tour at night to watch the green turtles lay their eggs (mid July to mid October). Sarapiqui

Sarapiqui borders the remote northern zone of Parque Nacional Braulio, one of the largest national parks in Costa Rica. Situated north-east of Poas, this region is beginning to attract mainstream tourists, and is a delightful off-the-beaten-track destination for wanderers, bird watchers and rafters.

La Selva Verde

A private reserve and lodge located just off the main road in Chilimate. Trails lead through 529 acres of tropical lowland forest by the Rio Sarapiqui. Guided hikes and self-guided trail maps are both available. This lodge has 40 rooms built with tropical hardwoods linked by palm-covered walkways. Meals are served cafeteria-style in the large dining room with its river view deck. Canoeing, river rafting, horseback rides and nature hikes are available.

La Quinta de Sarapiqui Inn

This tropical rainforest inn caters mainly for eco-tourists. In addition to its private cabins, this hotel offers a swimming pool, library, extensive trails, and frog and butterfly gardens. It is in a prime position just minutes from world-class river raft and mountain bike trails, Braulio Carrillo National Park, a tropical rain forest, and the La Selva Biological Station.

Located in the Sarapiqui Rainforest, this lodge has 36 striking thatched roof rooms. The property has its own pre-Columbian museum, botanical gardens, guides, restaurant and bar. The architecture is inspired by the indigenous pre-Columbian construction techniques of the region, used by natives for more than a thousand years. The round palenques (or ranchos) are covered with a traditional thatched roof of palm leaves. This lodge is located south of San Jose in San Gerardo de Dota which is near Costa Rica's highest Peak, Cerro de la Muerte. This is the best place to see one of Costa Rica's infamous birds, the Quetzal. This area is part of a very precious ecosystem and the Cloud Forest is filled with lots of mammals, amphibians, colourful birds and amazing plants. The lodge is actually a 105 acre farm which is 700 feet above sea level. It is the perfect retreat for nature birdwatchers and nature lovers. Savegre Mountain Lodge

Located south of San Jose in San Gerardo de Dota, this lodge is nestled in the Talamanca Mountains and is another great place to see the infamous Quetzal bird. All bedrooms have private facilities. This lodge is also a family run fruit farm, Don Efraín Chacón and his family arrived here in 1954 and were the first pioneers settling down in this valley. The Chacón Family not only have developed this wonderful lodge, but have taken advantage of the crisp weather to grow apples, plums, and peaches, used in their cooking. Rainbow trout abound in the Savegre River nearby which is great for fly fishing.

Arenal volcano

Arenal Volcano

This is the most spectacular sight in all of Costa Rica. The volcano erupts at least once every hour, and is especially magical at night, when a river of red-hot magma flows down its northern slopes. The Tabacon Hot Springs Resort is a very special place, there are 10 pools of thermomineral waters heated naturally by the volcano, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 40 degrees celsius. The pools are reputed to cure any number of maladies. Most people spend at least half a day and evening here, relaxing in the pools whilst drinking a cocktail watching the lava flowing from the volcano, having massage treatments or dining in the excellent restaurant. In and around this area there are lots of activities including horse riding and mountain biking. The Arenal Lake also offers activities including fishing and water sports, and canopy tours. The Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is also nearby.

Arenal Kioro Hotel

This hotel is located in the ultimate location, where you can see and hear the Arenal volcano. This is one of the newest hotels and offers excellent facilities. Each room has direct views of the volcano and a private jacuzzi bath, also with volcano views. The hotel has a wonderful restaurant, spa, its own nature trails and swimming pool. The hotel also offer transfers to their own hot springs.

The Arenal Paraiso

Another excellently located hotel with views of the Arenal volcano. With 74 rooms, each have volcano views and television. The deluxe rooms also having air conditioning and a balcony. The hotel has its own nature trails, an excellent restaurant, its own 11 platform canopy tour, stables, swimming pool and spa.

Arenal Springs Resort

This resort is located between the Tabacon Hot Springs and the village of La Fortuna. All 26 new colonial style deluxe cabins offer an impressive and unobstructed view of the north face of the active Arenal Volcano from your own private porch. There is also a swimming pool and restaurant.

Arenal Observatory Lodge

This lodge is located at the base of the volcano with a view of the Arenal Lake. Originally built in 1987 to operate as a biological station for scientists from the Smithsonian Institute and the National University of Costa Rica, the scientists continue to use the facilities, but it is also open to the public. With the volcano nearby and the frequency and intensity of eruptions, this lodge makes for a true natural history adventure. They also have their own nature trails and swimming pool.

Arenal Country Inn

Located in La Fortuna and run by a Costa Rican family, the lodge boasts 20 large bungalows each beautifully decorated with fine precious wood furnishings and all with a private terrace. The lodge has a swimming pool, open air bar, and dining area set within the old restored coral. This property is ideally located within walking distance of the town of La Fortuna.

This new resort offers luxury accommodation within a hundred acre rainforest, with direct volcano views. All rooms are spacious and beautifully designed with large private balconies. Monteverde Cloud Forest and the Santa Elena Reserve

Monteverde is a lush plateau 4,592 feet above the Guanacaste Plains. The Cloud Forest Reserve is extraordinary, a lush mountain habitat formed by a combination of high humidity and low cloud cover from trade winds. The area receives between three and five metres of rain each year, allowing for lush plant growth: ferns and moss, orchids and magnolia and huge zapote trees. Animal life is also abundant; more than 1200 species of reptiles and amphibians, 400 types of bird and 100 different mammals are found here. Guided tours are available. Downtown Monteverde is a bustling little village. A two day visit to Monteverde is recommended as the road to the area is purposefully left unmade to discourage day visitors.

Fonda Vela Hotel

This hotel is located in a 35-acre farm on the edge of the Cloud Forest, it is one of the nearest hotels to the Santa Elena Reserve. All rooms were designed with nature in mind, with large windows giving the feeling of the forest being right in your room. Both restaurants use the organically grown produce from the hotel grounds and lunches can be ordered to take into the reserves.

El Establo hotel

El Establo is situated in the heart of Monteverde about 7 kilometres from the Santa Elena Rainforest and four kilometres from the Monteverde Cloud Forest. This is a lovely family hotel, owned by Don Arnoldo and Dona Ruth. The hotel rooms are beautifully designed and some have a view of the ocean and Nicoya on a clear day. They all have TV and air conditioning. This is the only hotel in the area that has a swimming pool, and a water treatment plant and spa. The honeymoon suites have fabulous views and a jacuzzi bath.

Belmar Hotel

This chalet style hotel is ideal for those interested in enjoying nature and a peaceful place amidst the Cloud Forest. Owners and staff here are very helpful and will organise horseback rides and escorted tours should you wish.

El Sapo Dorado Hotel

This hotel is located near the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Santa Elena Rain Forest Reserve and the Sky Walk and canopy tour. It has 30 spacious mountain suites which are scattered on a hill. Each suite is built in wood with its own balcony. The dining room has a splendid view and offers international, vegetarian and typical Tico cuisine.

As the name suggests, this hotel is owned by the Trapp Family, who offer Swiss style chalet accommodation. This is the closest hotel to the Monteverde Reserve, with 28 rooms, 10 of which are newly built junior suites. Family rooms are available. Rincon de la Vieja

Rincon de la Vieja National Park is one of Costa Rica's best kept secrets. It has a wide range of natural attractions, including a volcano, mud pools and hot springs, a dry coastal forest and cloud forest and myriad forms of wildlife. You can climb Rincon de la Vieja volcano and peer down into its steaming caldera.

Borinquen Mountain Resort Hotel

Tamarindo is a beautiful beach area offering plenty of activities, including sport fishing, windsurfing, scuba diving, golf, horse riding, jungle boat tours, and snorkelling. The town of Tamarindo has much to offer with several bars, restaurants and a couple of nightclubs, where you can practice the merengue. Most hotels in this area allow you to walk out of your hotel straight onto a lovely beach.

Punta Islita

South Nicoya Peninsula

This stretch of coastline from the beaches of Playa Grande, where the Giant Sea Turtles go to nest, to the most southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula gives you a great opportunity to get away from the crowds and enjoy miles of stunning beaches, jungle and beautiful waterfalls. The scenery changes dramatically as the hot dry plains give way to hot lowland forests in the south of the peninsula. This area has some excellent properties, which are generally quite isolated.

Punta Islita

This is a fantastic property perched on a hill surrounded by mountains, overlooking the Pacific Coast with magnificent views. It is located on the North West coast of Nicoya Peninsula, just 40 minutes by air from San Jose. The open-air restaurant is excellent and it has its own private beach and multi-tier infinity swimming pool.

Situated on the Pacific Coast this area offers a fabulous combination of beautiful beaches as well as a National Park. Here you can relax on a beautiful beach whilst also being part of nature. The National Park is one of the smallest in Costa Rica and whilst the wildlife are by no means tame they are more used to humans and therefore easily seen. There is a wide range of hotels here, but these are some of our favourites.

El Parador Pools

The El Parador Hotel

Hidden in a small private world surrounded by beautiful gardens and plenty of space, this is a wonderful boutique resort hotel which offers different room types with some having fabulous views of the Pacific Ocean. El Parador Hotel brings luxury to the jungle. It is built in a Spanish style with antique Spanish furniture. Makanda By The Sea

This hotel is located 1 kilometre from the main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. The rooms are individually designed with each studio room or villa being extremely private. It has a magnificent swimming pool and a path leading down through the jungle to a secluded beach. There are only nine rooms which are hidden in the natural jungle and Japanese gardens, making it an ideal place for honeymooners. Breakfast is delivered outside your door in a cool box, inside is fresh fruit, fruit juice, bread, muffins, fresh coffee beans, and jam and butter. In your room there is a small kitchen area with a toaster, coffee maker, and fridge so you can eat at your leisure.

These individual bungalows are scattered on a 33 acre private reserve that ends in an idyllic private beach set in a secluded cove which has been awarded the blue flag. Snorkelling equipment and kayaks are available to guests free of charge. There is a bar, snack bar, changing facilities and toilets at the beach along with a main restaurant and swimming pool.

The bungalows have a separate bedroom containing two double beds along with two sofa beds in the lounge. There is a fully equipped kitchen and TV and video. Videos can be rented from reception. The hotel will also collect whatever grocery shopping you may require. Each bungalow has a panoramic view of the forest canopy and coast. Breakfast is served in the bar area, where monkeys, sloths, toucans, scarlet tanagers and green parakeets are normally seen.

La Mansion Inn

A small, romantic hotel situated on the mountainside overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Manuel Antonio National Park. It is situated just minutes away from pristine beaches, sport fishing at Quepos harbour, and the local airport. During your stay, you may see an incredible variety of animals including monkeys, sloths, anteaters, large iguanas and 'pizotes' as well as many bird species. The interior displays a wealth of original paintings by some of Costa Rica's top artists. Water is heated by solar energy. Built as a luxurious private residence, La Mansion Inn is an all-suite hotel and the suites are beautifully appointed with either a king-size bed or two queen size beds and the finest furnishings. Costa Verde Hotel

Nestled in jungle-covered hills, the Costa Verde hotel is a short walk from Costa Rica's most magnificent National Park and beaches. A long winding road leads to this hotel, nicknamed "the closest thing to heaven". Osa Peninsula

One of the truly wild places in Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula juts into the Pacific Coast at the southern tip of the country. Much of the peninsula is protected within the Parque Nacional Corcovado. As it is difficult to get to, this makes it all the more special and a unique place to visit.

Corcovado National Park's Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge

This lodge sits in a 170 acre private reserve bordering Corcovado National Park. It is the closest lodge to this National Park, which is considered, biologically, the most intense place on earth by the National Geographic society. A small 16 room lodge located in the middle of a private 400 acre rainforest reserve, in the remote area of Golfito on the South Pacific coast. Here you will have the opportunity to walk through the jungle and enjoy its fresh pools and beautiful isolated beaches. There are over 285 different bird species, so an ideal place for bird watchers. Tiskita is also an experimental farm for exotic tropical fruits. Several activities are organised from the lodge including horse riding and visits to the small neighbouring town.
