The Chiloe Archipelago of the Lake District is also an important site with distinctive ethnic influences and rich in mythical folklore. Consisting of several islands lying off the coast, it is separated from mainland Chile. The main island is Isla Grande de Chiloé and is home to the famous Palafito houses, national parks, traditional wooden churches (many of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO) and one of the world’s few temperate rain forests.
