A Chiva is a typical, old fashioned Latin American bus, with plenty of room on the roof for bananas and the odd chicken. Our Ground Agents have adapted the Chiva idea by putting the colourful "buses" on rails to take the historic train ride from Quito to Cuenca or Guayaquil. The journey includes the famous Devil's Nose - one of the most impressive feats of rail engineering in the world.
The Chiva travels through some areas of the countryside that has no roads and the excursion also includes some local excursions by regular bus to wonderful local and artisan markets. This is a great way to travel through the Avenue of Volcanoes and to end in the beautiful UNESCO city of Cuenca is fabulous. En route you can also visit the Inca ruins of Ingapirca.
I absolutely loved my journey on the Chiva, it was the ideal way to travel through the countryside. Children and local people waved hello as we passed through - we seemed to be a bit of an attraction to them!
