Horse Riding in Ecuador

Horse riding & Llama trekking

The high elevated Andean "Sierra" provides the best riding throughout Ecuador. Cotopaxi National Park is an excellent location for horse riding with its wild paramo plains reaching over 16,000 feet along with its centrally positioned awesome Cotopaxi volcano provides a classic Ecuadorian landscape. The Imbabura province with its pastoral views and white crested volcanic backdrops gives you as well one of the best riding in the country. It is possible to ride in most areas of Ecuador and also in the Galapagos Islands.

Horses are an important part of Ecuadorian life. They are still used on the hacienda farms and cattle ranches. A great option to take in the highlands is horse riding, as it is another way to enjoy this beautiful country. Many of the authentic haciendas you can stay with have their own stables. Horse riding can be arranged for all levels of rider, for example beginners are often recommended to take the tough mixed blood breeds while the experienced rider may be better suited with the pure breeds.

I used to ride many years ago and gave it a go again when I stayed at a lodge in the high altitude region by Cotopaxi. I thought I was going to die trying to get on the horse (a combination of the altitude and the exertion of trying to pull myself up onto the horse) - but I did it and it was definitely worth it.
