In Cuba there are two luxurious golf courses with professional characteristics. There were more before the Cuban Revolution, but some were bulldozed to make way for Army training centres and local housing. It wasn't that Fidel Castro had anything against the game, in fact he and Che Guevara, the Argentine doctor who became his most trusted field lieutenant and the revolution's most famous hero, played golf shortly after taking over the government. Guevara was mad about the game, according to his CIA file, which also reported that his only word of English was the word "golf." Despite that, the new revolutionary government began systematically plowing up the islands fairways and greens, banishing golf clubs as warrens of social exclusion and symbols of capitalist decadence.
The first golf course is the Havana Golf Club, often called the "DiploClub" located in Boyeros, just a five minute drive from Havana's city centre, where all the movie stars from the 1930s and 1940s played. Even historical figures such as Castro and other members of the government play there but being a Socialist country it is not exclusive so anybody can go.
Golfers who play off an 18/19 handicap regard the course at Varadero as far superior to those in the Bahamas. The golf course, which is adjacent to the five star Melia Las Americas Hotel was redesigned and upgraded in 1998 and provides a challenge for the low handicapper off the back tees and an enjoyable holiday course for the casual golfer. The par 72 course with four tee boxes offers great views and interesting shots to cater for all standards.
Both courses are steeped in history and are well worth playing. A Spanish hotel chain are planning to build 3 more Golf Courses in Cuba over the next few years.
