Sri Lanka is relatively unknown in the field of Golf, but surprisingly the country has three of the finest 18 hole courses in Asia. Golf started in Sri Lanka over 100 years ago with the Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship in the 1890's, which follows the British Amateur as the Oldest National Championship in the world. The courses are situated in Colombo, Nuwara Eliya and Digana near Kandy. All have distinctive terrain and climate conditions, which contributes to the enjoyment and challenge (as you could be playing golf in two different countries). Sri Lanka is also proud to announce its newest Golf course, The Water's Edge in Colombo which is more than just a golf club, offering more of a Country Club atmosphere with a swimming pool, gym, Health Spa and restaurants.
All of Sri Lanka's golf courses offer challenging golf along with well kept greens in magnificent surroundings of coconut palms, winding hills and large reservoirs, with an abundance of tropical birds and wildlife.
Sri Lanka is such a diverse country, offering travellers heritage, wildlife, culture and adventure. Why not build a golfing itinerary that includes sightseeing, riding an elephant through the jungle, night safari watching leopards hunt, white water rafting or even sitting on a beach watching the sunset? Non-golfers will never get bored, after dropping off the golfers there are plenty of shopping opportunities or Ayurveda treatments, so why not treat yourself?

Colombo - The Royal Colombo Golf Course.
The Royal Colombo Golf Course is the oldest in Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1879, and is the fourth oldest golf course outside the UK. Ironically, the course is situated in the middle of Colombo, yet it never fails to amaze players of its calm tranquil surroundings. The lush greens, tall pines, ponds in bloom with water lilies and the landmark Kelani Valley Railway Line that runs across the course all add to its natural beauty.
The course is flat with broad fairways; it will give players a false sense of security, especially if you are a beginner there are a number of hazards to look out for, including water and bunker hazards. The Royal Colombo Golf Club has been re-designed by architects of world repute, Donald Steel and Martin Ebert. The course is absolutely beautiful and the Club House is studded with comfortable and roomy foyers, a spacious coffee shop and much privacy in a fine

Colombo - Waters Edge Golf Club.
The newest addition to the Sri Lankan golfing arena, the Par 72, 18 hole Golf Course that was completed at the end of 2005. Located amidst tranquil and natural surroundings, the majority of this land area is covered by waterways, which are the main hazards.
The course has five par 5 holes, five par 3's and eight par 4's. Being almost link like in design, the wind will also make it challenging whilst making playing conditions pleasant. The driving range will have 20 bays, 300 metres in length and is floodlit for practice at night. Golfers will have a choice of practicing from turf to artificial mats. There is also a chip and putt area with bunkers, a restaurant and car parking facilities that can be directly accessed from the main road. This is also the ideal place for golfers to unwind and relax to the soothing sounds of rare and exotic species of birds.

Kandy - The Victoria Golf Club at Digana
Describing the Victoria Golf Course Architect Donald Steel says "Some golf courses have a splendid undulating terrain over which the holes are routed. Some golf courses have a scenic back drop of hills and lakes which excite the senses. However the Victoria Golf Course near Kandy is blessed with both attributes." Victoria was the first new course in Sri Lanka for more than 100 years. One of the most exhilarating and difficult holes at Victoria is the 7th hole, 473 yards in length and a par four. The drive from an elevated tee call for distance, accuracy and nerves of steel, if the player is to have a chance of reaching the green in two. Measuring 6,879 yards at its full Championship length, Victoria's par 73 layout has four par 5 holes of which three are over 500 yards long. There are four excellent par 3 holes ranging from the very short but tricky 5th of 124 yards to the testing 210 yards 13th hole, (a great par 3 by any standard).
