Diving
With crystal clear water Madagascar offers excellent diving, especially in the areas of Sante Marie and Nosy Be. Most dive centres are closed between February and May when conditions are least favourable. Ifaty in the South is an ideal sea resort for scuba diving. In addition to wonderful ship wrecks and sea life, Madagascar has 1000km of coral reef to enthral divers. NB: There are no decompression chambers in Madagascar.
Whale watching
From 1st July - 30th September migrating humpback whales come to use the warm waters of Eastern Madagascar for breeding. The Sante Marie channel offers a great opportunity to view these wonderful mammals in their own habitat. The Beautiful Princess Bora hotel offers eco-guides and whale protection programmes to really enjoy this experience.
Cycling
Madagascar is a good country for mountain biking. Many hotels hire bikes but for expert riders it is best to bring your own bike. Passing slowly through Madagascar's villages and towns you will experience the real country and certainly meet some interesting characters.
Bird watching
With such a vast array of endemic species, Madagascar is a must see for any serous birdwatcher. We offer local Malagase birding guides who have an intimate knowledge of Madagascar and its environment. With areas as diverse as rainforest, desert and dry deciduous forest, the wealth of birds endemic to Madagascar is vast.
Sailing & windsurfing
Windsurfing and sailing are growing sports in Madagascar, especially around Toliara and Fort Dauphin. You will need to bring you own kit as it can be hard to hire. The best season for windsurfing is August to February, whereas surfing is possible from March to September.
Canoeing
An opportunity to get up close to the beautiful landscape of Madagascar; paddling by Pirogue (traditional dugout canoe) across open plains through cliff gorges towering hundreds of feet up from the river; you really see rural Madagascar off the beaten track. Canoeing down the Tsiribihina River and visiting the Tsingy, an unusual lunar landscape of sharp limestone rock is also a really highlight. Tours are usually available from May to October but are dependent on the river levels.
Quad bike adventure
This is an adventure activity allowing you to get into areas of Madagascar unable to be reached by other modes of transport. 'Raid' is a nine day tour organised by experienced crew providing full technical assistance that leads you through this wonderful open terrain. There is an age limit of 21 yrs. Several hotels organise day excursions using quad bikes to explore and see parts otherwise inaccessible.
