Perched at 900 meters, (3,116 feet) above sea level between lower montane rainforest and cloud forests, the Lodge is surrounded by a profusion of plant species, from ferns and bromeliads to large numbers of orchid species, many newly-discovered. A staggering 500 species of birds – including some 36 endemics – are estimated to inhabit the forest, fluttering through the canopy. Monkeys, peccaries and even puma make their homes inside the Reserve crisscrossed by waterfalls, all between dramatic, verdant hills.

Mashpi is designed to completely immerse guests in the forest life, while keeping its creatures safely at bay – a luxury retreat amidst the dense forest and stunning mountain views. The rooms are arranged over three floors, all designed with floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall panoramic glass windows, some on two sides, with the forest just a few feet away.

“Nothing competes with nature here.”

Mashpi Lodge was built with the latest techniques for sustainable construction and is designed to blend perfectly with its natural environs. It features contemporary, minimalist decor, mixing warm earth tones, notes of bright colour, clean lines and striking angles and vistas: a luxury cocoon amidst the cloud and tropical forests, a unique natural world just steps away, ideal for discovery, exploration, contemplation and relaxation. 70% of the staff are local people. They have 23 rooms, 20 Wayra rooms & 3 larger Yaku Suites.

“We recommend a minimum stay of 2 nights here, 3 is ideal.”

On the northwest corner of the Lodge, on the Upper level, a lovely open-air terrace with pergola style roof, seats and tables is located for the guests to enjoy splendid views and relaxation with the forest and its inhabitants almost at touching distance. This is a favourite venue for early-morning bird-watching. Next door, a smaller more intimate terrace with chairs provides the ideal venue for quiet reading or a morning yoga session. Everywhere, corners with glass windows and relaxation chairs invite guests to enjoy nature and relax at any moment.

The food & services included at Mashpi are incredible. The Lodge’s towering, two-story Dining Room offers a dramatic setting for a lively gourmet experience. Here, Mashpi’s chefs draw from the diversity of Ecuadorian cuisine and ingredients, making the most of its location between the coast and the Andes: the best of both worlds. Mashpi offers a close-up experience of some of the most pristine forests in the world with the help of a team of naturalists and scientists. Not only do they lead hikes and give talks, they are involved in continuing studies of the local wildlife at the hotel’s research centre. From guided nature walks to the innovative Sky Bike, the lodge provides an array of ways to get out into the forest.
